PUBLIC SECTOR BUSINESS UNIT
Intoduction and objectives
The overall objective of the Public Sector Business Unit (PSBU) is to support our members working in the public sector and to enhance the delivery of healthcare, in the interests of patient wellbeing and safety.
There are 4 specific portfolios within this Business Unit, namely:
- Drugs and Shortages
- Equipment
- Working Conditions
- The South African Registrars Forum of Anaesthesiologists (SARFA)

PRIVATE PRACTICE BUSINESS UNIT
Introduction and objectives
The overall objectives of the Private Practice Business Unit (PPBU) are to ensure the sustainability of anaesthesiology in South Africa, to engage with private practice stakeholders such as medical funders, private hospital groups, government and regulators, to act as a voice of the profession with these stakeholders and to guide the profession on matters relating to private practice.
As such, the PPBU has the following portfolios within this Business Unit, which may be added to from time to time, namely:
- Education and Events
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Queries
- Medico-Legal and Treasury

REGULATION BUSINESS UNIT

The overall objective of the Regulation Business Unit is to define and support the self-regulation of the anaesthesiology profession by the members of the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists (SASA).

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS AND BRANCHES BUSINESS UNIT
Introduction and objectives
To co-ordinate and drive the various projects undertaken by the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and Branches, ensuring uniformity of practice and guidelines, while avoiding duplication of tasks.

SOUTH AFRICAN REGISTRARS’ FORUM OF ANAESTHESIOLOGISTS
Introduction and objectives
SASA believes that registrars are critical to the future success of the profession of anaesthesia. A dedicated unit that represents the concerns and challenges of registrars was established to ensure they receive the support that they require and assist in strengthening the growth of the profession.
The South African Registrars’ Forum of Anaesthesiologists, or SARFA, is a subunit of the Public Sector Business Unit (PSBU). Each year, a Chairman and Deputy Chairman are elected that engage with the Registrar representative appointed at each institution.
